Thank you to Karalyn Mumm, Tom Steinbeck and Gary Whitby who were willing to come share about their balloons with us!
Students learned how hot air balloons work by using the principle that warm air rises. A large fabric balloon, called the envelope, is filled with hot air heated by a burner. As the air inside the balloon gets warmer, it becomes lighter than the cooler air outside, causing the balloon to rise. The pilot can control the balloon's height by adjusting the temperature of the air inside. To descend, they simply let the air cool down. This is how the balloon floats up and down in the sky, guided by the wind.
